How Much Turkey Per Person for a Rental Thanksgiving

Whole golden roast bird on a white platter

You found the rental, picked the week and agreed who is coming. Now somebody has to order the bird, and the first question is how much turkey per person to plan for. Get it wrong at home and you run to the store. Get it wrong at 9,600 feet and you could be holding a turkey that will not fit the oven.

This guide is for anyone hosting Thanksgiving in a Summit County rental. By the end you will know why the published figures differ, what size turkey suits your guest count, and how to check the oven and pan before you buy.

How much turkey per person: where the figures differ

Ask five sources and you get several answers. All of them mean raw weight with the bones in, which is why the numbers look large. Food Network’s guide says to expect about 40 percent of a cooked bird to be usable, so a 15-pound turkey gives roughly 6 pounds of meat. Shared among 10 people, that is under 10 ounces each.

This table compares what each source advises for a whole bird.

UNH Extension1The low end

Food Network1 1/2, with 2 as the most you needGenerous
Well Plated1 to 1 1/2, or 2 with leftoversBuilt for leftovers

The two university figures come from Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s turkey food safety questions and the University of New Hampshire Extension turkey tip sheet. Nobody here is wrong. The gap mostly comes down to whether you are buying for one meal or for sandwiches the next day.

What size turkey do I need? A table by guest count

Pick the column that sounds like your group, then find your headcount. The weights below are simple multiplication, so they are a starting point and not a rule.

A small group is harder than it looks, because stores may not stock a 4-pound whole turkey. For two to four people, a breast often makes more sense, as we show further down. Past 20 pounds, read the oven section before you commit.

Adjust the number for your group

The table gets you close. These points move you up or down a column:

  • Children: Taste of Home suggests rounding down when kids make up much of the group.
  • Big eaters: Skiers back from a full day and hungry teenagers are the reason the 1 1/2 pound figure exists.
  • Light and dark meat: If you cannot tell who wants which, Food Network notes some chefs budget 2 pounds per person.
  • Sides: A long table of sides takes pressure off the bird. Our guide to how much food per person a mountain group needs covers the rest of the meal.

Leftovers and check-out day

Leftovers are worth less in a rental than at home. If you check out on Saturday, you have a day or two to eat them, and the rest has to go in a cooler for the drive or in the trash. On a short stay, the 1 1/2 pound column is usually plenty. Our guide on how long Thanksgiving leftovers last at a rental helps you plan the end of the trip.

Check the oven and pan before you buy

This is the step most guides skip, and it matters more in a rental than anywhere else. We found no reliable weight limit for a given oven, because ovens and birds both vary. A tape measure is the only sure test.

  1. Ask before you travel. Find out from the owner or manager whether the oven is full size, and whether a roasting pan is in the kitchen.
  2. Measure on arrival. Note the inside width, depth and height with the rack on its lowest setting.
  3. Find the pan. Rutgers advises a flat rack in a shallow pan, 2 to 2 1/2 inches deep. If the kitchen has none, buy one early, and set a thin foil tray on a sheet pan for support.
  4. Check the pan in the oven. Slide it in empty and shut the door, leaving room around it for air.
  5. Compare with the bird. Remember the turkey needs height as well as width.

Our list of vacation rental kitchen essentials covers what else to pack or buy. For the roast itself, our guide on cooking a turkey at high altitude covers time and doneness at 9,600 feet.

One big bird, two small ones or just the breast

If your guest count and your oven disagree, you have other choices. This table compares them. The per-guest figures for breast come from Taste of Home.

Food Network adds that two smaller birds may cook more evenly than one large one. In a compact condo oven, though, two pans rarely sit side by side. A smaller whole bird plus a breast on the second rack can be the practical answer, as long as air can move around both.

Buying and timing the bird

Rutgers notes that most retailers want turkey orders placed in advance, so do not assume a large bird will be waiting on the day you arrive. Our guide to grocery shopping in Breckenridge can help you plan the run.

A frozen bird also needs days in a fridge, so size and arrival day are tied together. Our guide on how to thaw a turkey when you are staying at a rental shows how to work that out. If you are feeding friends instead of family, our Friendsgiving dinner ideas cover who brings what.

Frequently asked questions

What size turkey do I need for 8 adults?

About 12 pounds at 1 1/2 pounds each. Go to 16 pounds if you want leftovers, provided the oven and pan can take it.

What size turkey do I need for 10 people?

Between 10 and 15 pounds for dinner, depending on appetite and the number of sides. Plan on about 20 pounds if everyone wants leftovers.

Is 2 pounds of turkey per person too much?

For dinner alone, usually yes. Food Network calls 2 pounds the most you need, and it mainly buys leftovers or insurance against a split between light and dark meat eaters.

How much boneless turkey do you need per person?

Taste of Home and Well Plated both land at about 1/2 pound of boneless breast per person. Bone-in breast runs closer to 3/4 pound each.
